Troubleshoot Unable to Select "Back up VM" After Registering Microsoft.RecoveryServices

When enabling VM image backups, the check-box may be grayed out even after enabling the Microsoft.RecoveryServices service provider as instructed by the error message.

This is because Nerdio Manager doesn't have backup reader on the subscription that holds the session hosts.

Note: This is common for Nerdio Manager instances that were deployed before the VM backup feature was introduced.

To fix the backup problem:

  1. In the error message, select Azure subscription to navigate to the appropriate subscription in the Azure portal.

  2. In the blade on the left side, select Access control (IAM).

  3. In the Role assignments tab, make sure that nerdio-nmw-app has the Backup Reader role.

  4. If nerdio-nmw-app does not have the Backup Reader role, select + AddAdd role assignment.

  5. Enter the following information:

    • Role: From the drop-down list, select Backup Reader.

    • Assign access to: From the drop-down list, select User, group, or service principal.

    • Select: Search for nerdio-nmw-app and select it.

  6. Once you have entered all the required information, select Save.

  7. Wait approximately 1-2 minutes and then return to Nerdio Manager and refresh your browser.

You should now be able to enable VM backups.
