Overview of host pools

After you create the desktop images, the next step in the Nerdio Manager AVD deployment flow is to create host pools from the desktop images.

Host pools are groups of identical Azure VMs that host the Azure Virtual Desktops that end users sign in to. All VMs in the host pool share a set of configuration options: VM size, OS disk size, base image, AD domain, user profile storage location, and more.

Host pools can be configured in the following ways:

Whether auto-scale is enabled:

  • Static: A static host pool contains a set number of session hosts that the administrator configures. That is, it does not have auto-scale enabled. Auto-scale can be enabled on a static host pool after creation, if needed.

    Note

When Nerdio Manager is first deployed to an existing environment, the host pools that are created are static. Auto-scale can be enabled on them afterward.

  • Auto-scale enabled: Session hosts are created and removed automatically based on your auto-scale configuration, according to workload demand.

    Note

This was previously referred to as a "dynamic" host pool. You may still see this term in some parts of the product while this terminology transition is in progress.

Where session hosts run:

  • Azure: Session hosts run entirely in Azure.

  • AVD Hybrid: Session hosts run on infrastructure connected via Azure Virtual Desktop for Azure Local or Nutanix AHV.
