Migrate an AVD Deployment from Tenants to Workspaces
AVD comes in two flavors: the old, non-ARM version-based Tenants (aka Fall Edition or Classic), and the new ARM version of AVD based on Workspaces (aka Spring Edition).
Microsoft has announced the non-ARM version-based Tenants will be end of life March 1, 2023. Therefore, if you are still using Tenants, we encourage you to migrate your AVD deployment from Tenants over to Workspaces. Nerdio Manager has automated this process for you.
Warning: Migrating from Tenants to Workspaces may take some time and disconnects any users that are currently connected.
To migrate from Tenants to Workspaces:
In Nerdio Manager, navigate to AVD Tenants.
Select Migrate to ARM.
Enter the following information:
Select Host Pool to Migrate: From the drop-down list, select the Tenants host pool to migrate.
Destination Workspace: From the drop-down list, select an existing Workspace to migrate the Tenants host pool to.
Note: If necessary, create a new Workspace on the Workspaces page. The host pool is created in the same resource group as the Workspace.
New Host Pool Name: Type the name of the new host pool that is visible to the user.
Note: Use alphanumeric characters only. This must be unique in the selected workspace and resource group. The Friendly Name is visible to users and can be changed later.
User Assignments: Choose to copy or move user assignments from the current host pools (app groups) to the new host pools.
Copy user assignments: Select this option to make a copy of the current user assignments in the Tenants object model to the newly created host pools in the ARM object model. Users see both assignments in their AVD feed.
Move user assignments: Select this option to move user assignments from the current Tenants object model to the newly created host pools in the new ARM object model. Users only see the new objects in the AVD feed.
Do not copy or move user assignments: Select this option to bypass making any changes to existing user assignments.
Tip: If you are planning to assign users to the new host pools based on group membership, select this option.
Migrate VMs: Toggle on this option to migrate existing VMs.
Note: Existing session host VMs can be migrated along with all host pool settings. The VM migration process uninstalls the existing AVD agent from each session host, re-installs the ARM AVD agent, and joins the VMs as session hosts to the ARM host pool.
- Process hosts in groups of: Type the number of machines to migrate at the same time during this bulk operation.
Number of failures before aborting: Type the number of failures that causes the process to stop.
Messaging: Toggle on the Messaging to send messages to active users.
Delay: From the drop-down list, select the number of minutes to wait after sending the message before starting the process.
Message: Type the message you want to send to the users.
Once you have entered all the desired information, select Migrate.
The migration process starts. You can follow its progress in the Tenants Tasks. Once the migration finishes, you can find your host pool under Workspaces instead of Tenants.
