Rolling Re-image Feature

Hey Hey Chuck here from Nerdio,

   Curious what feedback would be from you, the customers, on this feature idea. We do see many strategies when it comes to rolling out an updated image.  Would there be a use case/benefit for a "rolling" re-image?  The idea is that you may have a small image update to roll out, but not much of a maintenance windows to apply this.  In this case, I was thinking you can set a “rolling re-image”  that would be a one-time re-image of used hosts.  Similar to the option in auto-scale to re-image used hosts, but this this can be used for those who do not auto-scale or for personal dynamic pools.  After setting a "rolling re-image", the AVD host would be re-image after the last user logs off from the host.

This can then give you the ability to slowly roll something out without a big maintenance window.   Along with this, I think it would be beneficial to have a report of the “rolling re-image” status, giving a visual on how many hosts haven’t received the updated image.  Please chime in with any feedback or agreement with a need for this feature.

This sounds like a great option to have in the toolkit.  like you say the GUI will need to clearly show which hosts are updated and which are pending though.  probably an idea to have the ability to cancel and rollback too in case of problems with a rolling update.

Along the same lines, but not necessarily for re-imaging purposes, have the ability to specify a number of hosts that should be attempted to reboot during a “nightly” maintenance period. i.e. If there are 10 hosts in the pool, and host 1's is ‘always’ on, this would give it a chance to get a reboot every X days (for maintenance purposes… or to re-image etc.)

Hey Chuck, this would be an absolutely amazing feature.
Currently we are forced to manually manage the re-imaging process of all our production hosts, starting with a few “canaries”, and then manually and gradually rolling it out to the remaining host for each host pool. This is a painful time-consuming process… 😥
We're all about automation and orchestration here, if you could implement this feature and allow configuring of automated gradual session host re-imaging based on logic, this would be a huge improvement, especially for large scale environments.
