When reimaging an entire host pool, the expected behaviour is that it will remove the VM's and re-add with the same existing name. It would be nice to have an option to remove the existing VM's and create unique names completely.
This will help cases where the VM object has lingering information within the backend that might lead to errors during the re-image process.
For example, with Entra ID joined or Hybrid joined VM's, there are cases where the re-image process errors out due to existing objects within its database, specifically with Intune Enrolled devices. So the ability to create brand new unique names will work the limitation around at the re-imaging process.
Reimage Host pool Use Unique Names

Hi Roan - thank you for the suggestion. We will look into adding the option as suggested to the re-imaging process. I wanted to share this recommended approach as well:
- Adjust auto-scale configuration to not re-use names
- Delete session hosts and allow auto-scale to re-create them with new names
OR
- Turn auto-scale OFF temporarily
- Add new hosts (new names will be used)
- Delete old hosts (or do this in reverse order)
